The Raven Keep Campaign
This campaign set in the Forgotten Realms began at RTC San Diego way back in June of 1994. I had just reported to my first Naval command, a pre-commissioned ship still being constructed at the NASSCO shipyards. I was reading in my bunk at the barracks when another sailor wandered past and asked what I was reading. I held up the book (something by Weiss and Hickman although I cannot remember what) and when he saw the cover, he became very excited and asked if I had ever played D&D.
I told him yes and he explained that he had been looking for someone to be the DM for a group of other players he had collected. I said “why not” and before long discovered myself surrounded by about a dozen other squids all looking to get in on some game time.
Most of the players only showed up for the first couple of sessions but by move-aboard day (the day we moved out of the barracks and onto the ship), I was down to about four regulars. Raven Keep is the name of a stronghold they pulled from a Deck of Many Things. Even though I have long since completed my term of enlistment and most of the current Player Characters have never even seen the Keep or moved on to bigger and better things, “Raven Keep” is still the name I use for the campaign.
